Q: Why does the driver leave some plastics with a #1 though #7 on them?

A: The program only accepts #1 - #7 narrow-neck plastic bottles, but not tubs or other plastic containers because they contain a different resin type from the bottles and are not currently marketable.

Q: Do I need to bundle my paper items to separate them from my cans and bottles?

A: The blue toter recycling program is a "comingled" program. It is not necessary to do any seperation. Just toss your items in and they will be seperated at a recycling facility.

Q: My blue toter is much larger than my yellow bin and I don't feel I need all that room.

A: The blue toter program is designed with convenience in mind for our residents. It is not necessary to place your toter out every week. Only putting your toter out when it's at least half full increases the efficiency of our program. Additionally, the larger size helps to accommodate large pieces of cardboard and boxes.

Q: I cleaned out my garage and have old paints, pesticides, auto fluids and other toxic materials. What do I do with them?

A: The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility is open every Saturday and drop-off is free. The HHW facility is located at the Vacaville Sanitary Service Recycling Center, 855 1/2 Davis Street in Vacaville. No appointments are necessary for this service. The center is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Q: What do I do with my empty paint cans?

A: If the cans are entirely empty and dry, they are no longer hazardous waste and may be placed in the gray toter. Leave the lids to the paint cans off when depositing the dry empty cans in your grey toter. If the paint cans contain wet paint residue, you can take them to the HHW facility at the Vacaville Sanitary Service Recycling Center, 855-1/2 Davis St., any Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Q: What do I do if my green toter is full and I have more yard waste to discard?

A: You can place additional materials in 32-gallon garbage cans with handles and lids. The filled container cannot exceed 50 lbs in weight. Shrub prunings can be bundled with twine in 2' x 3' bundles and placed alongside the toter. Additional toters also can be rented for $4.00 per month.

Q: Why can't I put my yard waste in plastic bags?

A: Materials collected in the yard waste program are taken to the composting site at the B&J Landfill. There they are ground for composting. Plastic bags do not biodegrade and the shredded bags would be part of the compost produced. That's not a welcome addition to a garden!
